On April 17, I had the opportunity to address Members of the American Bar
Association (ABA) who were holding their annual meeting in New York City. The Convention attracted lawyers from both the US and abroad. I described the process and activities toward a
Convention thus far and outlined how Aging NGOs have encouraged this development. Other panelists included Craig Mokhiber from the Geneva-based Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; Luz
Melon, an Argentine diplomat and former Chair of the Group of 77 and China of the UN General Assembly. The Honorable Kristin Booth Glen, who presides over the Surrogate Court in Manhattan, moderated
the session. The ABA intends to work actively toward a human rights convention at the UN. Read Charles Sabatino's summaryof this promising development

Année Européenne Du Vieillissement Actif Et De La Solidarité Entre Les Générations
La fragilité, sens ou non-sens?
Après l’année 2011, dédiée au bénévolat, voici l’ «année européenne du vieillissement actif et de la solidarité entre les générations». Dans ce cadre s’est tenu, le 21 octobre 2011 au Parlement européen, à Bruxelles, un colloque sur le thème «Sens ou non-sens de la fragilité humaine dans la société européenne contemporaine». Il était organisé par la Fédération Européenne des Associations Médicales Catholiques (FEAMC).
Une des deux Petites Sœurs des Pauvres participantes nous partage ce qui l’a particulièrement touchée.

2012: European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations!
2012 has been designated the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and has three main focus areas. Meetings, publications and other activities will look at how to enable active ageing to ensure older people can:
- Stay in the workforce and share their experience
- Keep playing an active role in society
- Live as healthy and fulfilling lives as possible
Solidarity between generations is seen to be a cross-cutting issue in these three areas. Topics addressed during the year will include employment, health care, social services, adult learning, volunteering, housing, IT services and transport.
The 2012 European Year (EY2012) seeks to raise awareness of relevant issues and the best ways of dealing with them. It aims to go beyond awareness-raising however, encouraging stakeholders, including policymakers, to set themselves goals and take action to meet them. More information, including best practices, can be found on the official EY 2012 website, in all official EU languages.
Eurodiaconia has been an active member of the 2012 coalition, bringing together a wide variety of organisations from across civil society sectors, including social, health, education NGOs, the business and unions.
The coalition has published a leaflet of proposals and best practices and a manifesto of recommendations for the year. For more information see the Healthy Ageing and Elderly Care pages of the website.
Eurodiaconia will organise a number of events linked to the year and participate in many more. Eurodiaconia members are encouraged to get involved in discussions and events nationally. For more information please contact Laura Jones, responsible for the EY 2012 in the Eurodiaconia secretariat.
This year, Eurodiaconia will be exhibiting images from its members' work that portray solidarity between generations.
The photo exhibition will be shown in the European Parliament on the same day as the Eurodiaconia Award 2012 ceremony. Members of Eurodiaconia are encouraged to send in photos of their understanding
of intergenerational solidarity in a diaconal context to aisling.vanvliet@eurodiaconia.org by the 30th of July.

Dear GAA Friend,
This week the UN focused on the Commission for Social Development and the need to have social protection--pensions, health care, and much more -to support a civilized and thriving society.
Aging NGOs staged a panel exploring the "social protection floor," and described some minimum features to assure all citizens such protection.
GAA's interns observed these sessions; I helped NGO colleagues develop alternative language to offer delegations for the "outcome document".
GAA's web postings offer clear examples of how governments are assuring or developing or eliminating such protection in their countries. GAA will have more news next week after the Commission concludes on February 10, 2012.

UNECE’s Working Group on Ageing held its third annual meeting on November 22nd and 23rd to discuss issues surrounding ageing in the region.
The Working Group agreed to organize a Regional Ministerial Conference on Ageing, to be held in Vienna in September 2012, on the tenth anniversary of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing
and the adoption of its regional implementation strategy in Berlin. The conference will allow ministers to review progress and decide on future directions for making and implementing policies
on ageing.
